LIEUTENANT LAURENT, V.C.
HEARTY WELCOME HOME. fly Telegraph—Press Association Hawera, July 10. Many hundreds of people gathered shortly after midday to welconio Lieutenant Laurent, V.C. Tho street fronting the station was packed by a den6o crowd. The speakers were the Mayor and Major Cox (Group Commander), who gave a hearty welcome hack to Lieutenant Laurent. The Citizens' and Salvalion Army Bands were present. Many people carried ilags, and several buildings were beflagged. The whistles of tho timber mills were sounded. After the /speeches cheers were, given in honour of tho soldier, a procession was formed, headed by the Citizens' Band, and proceeded to the Laurent home. On 1 the piriform was Lieutenant Laurent's grandfather, aged ninety-four. The crowd gave him on enthusiastic ovation. The hero's grandmother was also present in a motor-car. The crowd was the largest seen in Hawera since the armistice. Later, when Grant, V.C, returns, both he and Lieutenant Laurent will be made presentations by the citizens.
