A subject of considerable interest is 'broached by Mr. A. Buchannn in two important notices of motion which he has tabled for consideration at the- ne.tt meeting , of the Palrnerston North branch of tlio Farmers' Union. Mr. Buchanan will move—(l) "That the Farmers' Union should consider the practicability of forming a bargo ciuinl between Pafmerston North and I'oxlon, such ciuiul to be the forerunner of a ship canal in the future." (2) "That the Farmers' Union consider tho desirability of the harbour boards of tho Dominiou being empowered and assisted by the Government to purchaso a, commercial fleet, the same to bo subsidised by the Government, in the same manner that the Minister suggested should be done ivith private companies." At its meeting on Monday night tha Campbell Street School Committee, of Palmerston North, decided that as soon cut Mr. Massoy and Sir Joseph Ward returned representations bo made to Cabinet regarding the erection of a new school. The first 6ocial in connection with tho liroad Street Methodist Church Literary and Debating Society, of Pnlmerston North, was held this week and passed off very successfully. At the Jiieetiiig of tho Palmcirstoa North Peace Celebrations Committee this week a hearty welcome wa.s extended to Colonel Whyte, D.5.0., who recently returned from Egypt. Colonel Whyte in returning thanks said that ho hoped at some fttturo timo to tell them eomethiug of tho work of tho mounted men. Tho cablegrams had not given as much publicity to the mounteds as to the infantry, and seeing that so many of tho former hailed from Palmerston North and other country districts a description of their work might not bo out of place. Colonel Wnyte's offer to do'iver an address was accepted with thanks.

Miss P. Tj. Seeker has been appointed an assistant on the staff of tho Campbell Streot School, 1-almeroton North. The I'nlnic-i'ston North Peace Celebrations Corumitteo has decided to adhere to its original nrrangeinents for a. two days' celebration —on tho Saturday and Monday. The latter day will bo given over entirely to tho children. Uonfires will bo lit on Saturday night, and tho firewurks display given on the Monday evening.

A strange motor, smash occurred in Cuba Street, Palmorslou North, on Monday evening. Mr. .T. J. Knight, of Aoknutcre, had left his enr, with lights burning, standing in front of tlio Working Hen's Club, shortly after 5 o'clock. Close on 7 o'clock it was found about GO foot further up tho street, in a disabled condition, thrown across tho bicycle track. It was asserted to tho police that tho smash was tho result of another car running into Mr. Knight's car. The impact was so forceful that the latter car was carried the distance mentioned. The other car was also entangled, J>ut backed out and has not been seen since. Mr. Knight's car was extensively damaged.
