U Writing under dato .May 5, Messrs. 'Gilbert Anderson and v,-0., London, report that Home nnd. Imported meat is still controlled, both for distribution and prices. The large quantity of Brazilian, I itairciiurian, and African. beef distributed by the Government for disposal on SniUhfield has been the of much discontent, the quality being inferior and much beiow the usual standard for frozen beef. The large percentage of this beef available left the retailers with no choice but. to accept the meat or have empty shops, and matters were brought to a'climax,last'week wnen a demonstration was made by some 1000 retailers, and delegates were appointed to represent their interests' at a conference with tho Ministry of i'ood. , „ . This had the good result_ of securing a substantial release -n ■ New Zealand mutton,'lamb, and 4 beef,, which has been conspicuous by its absence during tho last few weeks.' In ; fact, it' is -' many months'since good quality Newi'Zealaud beef was released.by'tho authorities. There"will always be a .gcod'.inarket for New Zealand meat,- providing that the old standard of gradinc'>9'maintained,'', and it is to be sincerely , hoped' that farmers and shippers will 'request the .authorities to-see. .that their shipments are not,used to supply the countries that wiil' novel- be importers of their meat under normal conditions, but. that their brands'-may., bo'distributed so as to hold imd> maintain the premier position which thev held before tho war.
