■ ■ ./COMPENSATION OFFICERS. The position of. contributors" to .the Public Service Superannuation-i'und who acquired compensation rights under tun Civil Service Act, IE6G, is (says the "Public Service Journal") slightly involved, so'thnt an explanation may be helpful to , those interested. Under section' 32 of the' Public Service Classification and Superannuate Act, 1908, the right-.;to compensation for loss of- office is pits'served. Section 26 of the Appropriation Act, 1910, authorises payment of compensation en death whilst in the eerviuu, but only if there is a widow surviving. The various phases of the case liro as follow:— .Before Retirement on Superannuation. ' (1) If lie 'dies whilst in the 6ervico, *™ leaving a widow 'surviving, the total g amount of comp'iisation is payable out • | j of the Consolidated Fund to the estate. ■This means that he may dispose of tii« ! amount by will, and that it will become ! available for payment. of his debts,. if i any. The widow will be entitled to re- I ceive the total amount of his contribu- j •tions to the fund, Any children under j 1-4 Years of age will receive the statutory • i ■allowance of "live shillings per woek until 1 reaching that age. ' j fiy If there be no widow surviving the ! right to'compensation will lapse. Thetotal amount of contributions, less any ; sums payable to children under U years \ of age, is paid to his personal repre'senta- . tives. The statutory allowance of iive | shillings per week each is payable-.to | any children under 11 years of age until reaching that age. y After Retirement on Superannuation. j (3) A contributor may elect Tor accept t the total amount of his compensation and I contributions, without 'interest, in lieu of I an annual retiring allowance. Should g he so elect neither ho nor his widow, nor | liis children, in case of his death, will have" any further,claim on the Superannuation' Fund. ' (i; If after the date of his retirement, but before accepting any payment of his retiring allowance, he should die, the total amount of his compensation mul S contributions will be payable lo his legal personal representatives, but his widow and children, if any, will not be entitled i to the statutory allowances. . . J (5) If after'he shall have received payment of portion of his retiring l allowance, tj but less than , the total amount of his S compensation, plus total contributions, X lie.dieChis.widqiV'will have the right to elect to uc'cept'the difference between the two amounts in lieu of an annual allowance uf '.£lB. If there be no children under 14 then the whole of the difference will be payable' to the legal personal lepresentatives. (6/,_On his death, after having received, by .way of retiring allowance, an amount equal to, or greater tlian, the total of his compensation plus contributions, his widow is entitled to receive the statutory allowance of .£lB a year, ana anv children under 14 years, of age will receive the allowance of five shillings per week. This provision applies to all retired'contributors whether they be compensation officers or not.
