WELLINGTON'S 'OLDEST HOUSES. Memories of some of, Wellington's old buildings were revived at a meeting of. the historical section of the Philosophical Institute last night. One of the buildings mentioned was tho block of offices now in process of demolition at the junction of Waring-Taylor Street and Lambton Quay. This building was the first to be,erected on the harbour side of Lamb, tori Quay, vrliich originally was the water, front. It was built on reclaimed land. A member of'tho section mentioned'that the demolition of tlio building was re. vealirtg spnio - charred. beams. / Tho .. charring' toOk' plate' about the. when'V flax store!, oa the. next section caught fire. .'Two incidents in connection with this fire had impressed themselves on the memories of several members of the 'section. Tho first incident was the breaking of the fire Brigade's ;lodder when three mini were, on it. The men wore precipitated to the ground, and tho bottom man-was'injured."''The Other incident was ■ the frenzied agitation of a citizen who came to view, the fire and found that-a rat, driven from tho store by the flames,' had taken refuge in tho . leg of his 'bell-bottomed trousers. / One of tho oldest houses in Thorndon, said a member, is tho residence in Moles-' wortli Street formerly used as St. Paul's ■ parsonage. "There are houses Moles- . worth Street .that ■■ looked old in the 'sixties;" said another member. One oi' the old, paling roofs, long ago condemned , by tho fire brigade authorities, has sur- ; vived. Nearer the hills, at tho corner of Grant Road and Park Road, there ore two cottages which were built in tho 'forties for the accommodation of mili-tary-officers. Originally there wero four' of these cottages, but two of them wero burned down very mnny years ago. The timbesrs of the old cottages are stated to be quite sound still. The section decided to invito tho assistance of the Wellington Photographic Society in securing photographs of the city's oldest buildings.
