MEETING OF HISTORICAL SECTION. A meeting of'tho Historical Section'of the Philosophical Institute ivaa held at the Dominion Museum lnat night. Mr. Elsdon Best presided, and there was an attendance of about, twenty members. The Rev. Father Gilbert read a paper, reported in another column, on "The Survey and Pl'an of tho New Zealand Company's First Settlement." He was accorded a hearty voto of thanks for his paper, which" dealt' with tho original sur- , ve.v of the City of Wellington. Father Gilbert mentioned that he had gathered some information concerning the names' of AVellington streets, but had not yet had opportunity to prepare it for presentation to the section. Dr. C. Prendergast-Ivnight read a paper entitled "An Episode in fhe Life of Sir George _ Grey.'] Thd paper contained a transcription of a letter written in AJ.ay, 1841, by Dr. Prendergast-Knight's grandfather, Dr. Chnrles Knight, at the close of a voyage, from England to Adelaide in the ship Lord Glenelg. Dr. Charles Knight was surgeon of the ship, and. Sir ■ George Grey (then Cn'ntain Grey) was a passenger. • Captain Grey, accompanied by his wife was on his way to South ; , Australia,. wl,sr» ho', had been appointed Governor. The voyage was an exceedingly adventurous one.' The crew was mutinous, and the captain of the ship was deposed by the first mat®, who was armed with a medical certificate issued [by the doctor. The letter describes "my singular metamorphosis from surgeon into caotain of the vessel, and how I navigated-her from King George's Sound to this port (Adelaide) in perfect safety."'

Dr. Prenderirnst-Knight was accorded a heartv vote of thanks. The meeting discussed matters of general interest to members.
