MORE COAL MINERS
APPLICATIONS FROM AUSTRALIA
Some.little time ago the Government invited coal and gold miners from Australia to come over to Now Zealand. Tho invitation was made just about tho lime tlin:'; tho town of Cobar was closed down utter the mines in the vicinity had ceased ojwrations. The Government ha» been advised that applications have been received) from a number of coal miners and gokl miners. It is understood that 101) conl miners and 70 gold miners have offered, to come here. Owing Ho the influenza restrictions, and the necessity of repatriating first of all tlio stranded New Zealanders in Australia, it is not intended that tbe gold miners shall ba brought across just yet. Fifty of thg coal miners will come in tho Stoeraki, along with 200 of the New Zenlr.nders at present exiled. Tho coming of a considerable number of miners to the pits in this country would do something to alleviate tho present very embarrassing shortage of coal, for with more iabonr tho pits will produce much more coal than is at present being won.
