THE EPIDEMIC IN AUSTRALIA. Sydney, May 31. After steadily decreasing to low limits, tho influenza epidemic during tho past few days has shown an increasing tendency. Yesterday deaths in the metropolitan area numbered five and new cases 72. In South Australia a number of country districts have become infected, while in Adelaide there is a considerable number of new cases. Few deaths havo been reported. In Queensland the deaths so far are about 90. The disease maintains a strong hold in Brisbane, and many new cases have been reported. Public services and business gftnerally are suffering materially. The Royal Agricultural Show has been abandoned. In Victoria the epidemic maintains about the average of recent weeks. Of 27 deaths yesterday 10 wero in country areas.—Press Assn.
