IMPROVEMENTS OF RACING BASILS THAT NEED REMEDYING. 3y Telegrs.ph—Press Association. Christchurch, May 29. At the annual meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club this afternoon the president (Mr. Alexander Boyle), in Ins address, said the actual racing during the past season hadvbeen successful, but there was a growing feeling amongst the racing community that everything was not as it should be. It was impossible for any one, club to remedy the evils that undoubtedly existed, but when these evils became common talk it was high time some drastic measures were taken. There was no shadow of doiflbt that tjio riding had deteriorated throughout the Dominion, and there appeared to be very few apprentices who were likely to become first-class horsemen. He considered that it was to be-sincerely regretted that a few lacing clubs should continue to m« crease the number of races under one mile on their programme. The conference should without doubt give grav9 consideration as to the advisability of limiting the number of • five and six furlong flutters in each day's racing. During the discussion Mr. J. S. .Barrett drew attention to tho spread of illicit betting, and 6aid the Racing Conference and the clubs should give the matter their serious attention. The racing' people needed to put their house in order, or possibly tho ienthusiasts who had tried to deal with another alleged evil might turn their attention to racing, which would be harder to deal with than the evil he had referred to. The president said Sir George Clifford, chairman of tho Racing Conference, had told him the conference intonded to legislate very shortly on the question of betting. Acceptances for the Horowhenua Meeting are duo at 8 o'clock to-night. I lie Telegraph Office at Levin closes at .5 p.m.
