« ■ NEW ZEALAND UNION ANNUAL MEETING OP COUNCIL The twenty-seventh annual meeting o! the Council'of the" New Zealand Rugbj Union was opened at midnight .last night. Owing to tho protracted discussion at an adjourned meeting on mattew connected with the rules and lawi of the game, it was not possible to deal with the business of the annual meeting at an earlier hour. Mr. H. Harris presided. Tho chairman, in moving the adoption of the annual report alid balance-sheet, details of which havo been published in The Dominion, urged the need for encouraging football in tho eschools. 1M unin should do its utmost to this end by agreeing to a substantial grant to the Publio Schools' Union. The past year had been a. successful one, and the augury for the future was satisfactory. Tho report and balance-sheet were adopted.

Officers for the ensuing year wero 'elected as follow:—Patron, His Excellency the Governor-General, the Earl of Liverpool; president, Mr. F. T. Evans (Christchurch); Management Committee, Dr. Ritchie Crawford, Messrs. B. A. Mams, C. A. Mathieson, E.- 0. Hales, G. W. Slade, and K. Akers; Appeal ■ Gounci, iMews. F. Cowlishaw, W. G. Gairod, and G. H. Mason; auditor; Mr. 0. G. Kember; representative on Endish Rugby Union, Mr. Cecil Wray Palliser; hon. treasurer, Mr. T. H. Jones. The meeting decided that the presidents of the various unions should act as vicepresidents. . _. A vote of thanks was accorded to Mr. C. Wray Palliser for his services as representative on (he English Union. It was decided that for the coming vear the Appeal Comniittco should he elected by tlio Management Committee and locate! iii Dunedin, "nd tliat the Appeal Council should sit in Christehurch for the next three years. On behalf of the Wellington Union, Mr. W. P. Hornig moved:—"That the Ranfurly Shield regulations be amended as follows:-That regulation No. jl be deleted and the following substituted; (3) All special challenge matches shall lie played on the ground of the holder of flio shield, for the time, being, 'but. any affiliated union meeting the holder of the shield in the ordinary course of intermi ion matches (whether on the holder's ground or not) may give notice to the N.Z.R.F.U. and to the holder not less than fourteen days before the day appointed for the match, declaring 6uch match to be a lianfurly Shield challenge match." The motion was carried unanimously. To encourage school football it was decided to recommend tlic Management Committee, to make a grant of <£200 to tho Public Schools' Union
