THE ASSOCIATION GAME

INSTITUTE DEFEAT MARIST. Tho principal game of the day was played at Association Park between Marist Brothers Old Boys and Boys' Institute Old Boys, llnrist liad out their strongest team, while Institute were not nt their usual strength, as M'Arthur rin-l Porter had both been laid aside by illness during the week. It speaks well for their enthusiasm that both players decided to play. A rousing game was expected and the spectators were not dis appointed, although the wind marred Rood football. Marist were much the heavier team, and playing with the wind in their favour it looked as if the lnfllitute defence was in for a warm lime, but they more than lichl their own. Smilh and Porter, on the Institute'riuht; were in great form, their combination being excellent. Time and asain they raided the Marist goal, but Thomas and E. Fitzgerald were equal to the occasion, and always transferred the play to the Institute half of the field. A. Lowe and Mooney, of Marist, combined well together, and gave M'Arthur, Institute's capable- right-half, lots of work, but riirht well did he perform his task, allowing them few opportunities of testing Tarrant. The Institute halves were in great form, and repeatedly sent their forwards ahead. M'AWhur passed to Porter, who beat the half-back and slipped on to Smith, who raced along the touchli'ie rind s"it in a pnod shot, which the Marist goalkeeper only partially cleared. TV ball came out tq M'Girr, who, from 12 yards out, sent in a shot which gave tho sjoalkeener no chance to save". Institute, 1; Marist, f). M'EUiott, of Marist, who was playing a clever game, let Carruthers away, his parting shot goh>3 behind. Mooney, of Marist, was noticeable for a splendid shot at goal, Tarrant tipping the ball over thp cross-bar. Institute civme away again. Halley centred well. Port°r forcing a corner. Smith landed the ball in the goal-mouth, ami from the melee M'Girr hoiked the ball through. Institute, 2; Marist, 0. Marist now took matters- in hand and forced many cornere, nil of which were admirably taken by Lowe, but the Institute defenders always manaqed to head clear. W. Thomas bid » »reat •diot at eonl. but Tarrant saved well. Marist continued to pre's. Marshall sent in a shol which Lowe dashed in to convert, but Tarrant ilivwl 'nil l-nitl> nml m;sh"d the ball away from his toe just when he was in the act of shoeing, a corner resulting. It was a great save, which received the Se-ervpd aophune of the spectators. Halftime sounded with Marist pressing. Tlih second half opened quietly, play being of a give-and-take nature for the first 20 minutes. Trom then on Marist showed to advantage. Their forwards forced th? pace, but could not got past Bell and Waiulen, who were very safe at back. Porter and Smith still continued to coinbine well. Smith sending in a cood shot from a difficult nnsle, the Marist noalkeeper clearing, Halley wa« n»xt noticeable for a clever run. his final shot just missing the posts. Thomas let Mooney away; he passed So Carruthers, who landed the ball .jn the goal area, the ball bobbing about the goal. Tarrant, lying on tho ground, scooped the ball clear, but the referee was in a good position to judge, and without hesitation awarded a goal, the ball going over the line and no more. Play now became very fast, but the Mnrist 'halves, instead of placing the ball to their forwards, sent it ahead of them, with the result that the Institute backs had ample time, to clear. Towards tho close of the game, Houston secured possession and sent on to Smith, who, with a fine solo run, beat two opponents, and with no one but the; goalkeeper to beat, sent the ball past the post. Tlie gamo ended sliortlv after, Institute being victors by 2 goals to 1. the game throughout was cleanly contested, not a single free-kick beine awarded for unfair tactics.
