MINE-SWEEPING
c — GOOD KECORD IX NEW ZEALAND. It says a good deal for Captain HallThompson (Naval Adviser to the Gov-, ernincnt) and Commander Keily (officer in charge of the mine-sweepers) that out of 60 mines known to have been anchored in New Zealand waters -47 actually been accounted for. The authorities are now pretty sure that the seas are 6at'e, as |the fields laid down have been well swept quite recently during a spell of calm weather without any result. . The assumption is that those nriiiQS not accounted for have broken loose from their moorings, and have exploded themselves on the rocky shores m remote parts of the coast. In view of the big field of mines planted off Cape Farewell and North Cape by the Wolf the loss of only two steamers by mine action is considered exceptionally fortunate Ji view of tho practically uninterrupted traffic' over the course mined.
