FAREWELL TO THE DIRECTOR,
Yesterday the staff of Base Records, num. Bering over three hundred, gathered to bid farewell to Major Norton Francis, C.M.G., who is relinquishing the position of Director of Base Bebords to return to his business pursuits in Canterbury. ■Major Koacke, D.5.0., who is succeeding Major Norton Francis at the head of the branch, congratulated the latter on Uie splendid organisation which he was flbla to hand over. The swiftness with which the nation was thrust into war, and the rapid development of armies, required, Ho. said, correspondingly rapid organisation, and it was fortunate indeed that New Zealand had such men as Major Norton Francis with ' the ability' to cope with tin demands of the times. \ Mr. Mathieson, on behalf of the staff, expressed their thanks for the late Director's consideration to them. They realised what strenuous times he had gone through, working night and day, and they wished him every success on his return to civil life. (Applause.) Major Norton Francis,, in returning thanks, said that when he looked back on the four and a half years ho had served with the Defence Department he felt it would be a very big break to leave the Department. All but six months.or his time had been spent with Base Records Branch, and like the rest of those present he was proud to have been associated for so long a period with the office. He felt that no other branch ot the service liad a staff which gave more patriotic, strenuous, and unselfish work than the staff of Base Records. Tho function ended with three cheers for Major Norton Frauds, and another for Mrs. Fiancis.
