Referring to the hydro-electric schemes k-dny Sir William Friiser said the work of sinking experimental shafts on either side of the gorge ir. connection with the harnessing of the Waikato River was now in progress. Provided the test proved satisfactory the construction of the dam would be proceeded with. It was estimated that a plant with a capacity of 11)2,000 horse-power could ultimately be installed at this station. To fulfil its function in the general schome proposed by Mr Parry, a plant with a capacity of 1>5.000 horse-'powtv ''&* required. Work was also progressing in connection with tilt Mangaliao scheme, near Palmerston ' North, which was considered capable of developing 24,000 horse-power, and which would be the 'other main North Island generating sttaiou. Sir William I'raser added that there was no intention of proceeding with the I/ike 'Waikaremoaua for oorae time. Tho cost of completing the Waiknto and Mangaliao schemes was estimated at between five and six million pounds. V
