PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL
Tho fortnightly meeting of the Petono, Borough Couucil was held on Monday evening. There wero present:—His Worship tlie Mayor (Mr! J. W. M'Ewan) and Councillors Brocklebank, Cox, Newland, Churchouse, M'Dougall, Kyle, M'Keiizie, Jones, and Tovey.
A letter was road from the General Manager of tho Railways intimating that the Department was unaware of any satisfactory automatic device which would fulfil requirements for gates for railway carriage platforms. On tho motion of Councillor M'Koiizie it was decided to again write to tho Department, asking it to further consider the matter of making tlio platforms of carriages moro secure for the travelling public, and pointing out that automatic gates worked well in England and America, and "should work well in New Zealand.
An application ■ was received from tho Labour Representation Committee for permission to hold a Labour meeting in the Grand Theatre oil Sunday last. The Town Clerk explained that the application was not received until Saturday, and it was too late to bring it under tho notice of the council.. Councillor Churchouse, a member of the party, explained that tho lateness in applying for a permit was duo to a misunderstanding. In connection with tlio matter, a protest was received from tho United Christian Association of Petono against permits being given for political meetings on Sundays. In view of the explanation given, the council decided to take no action beyond notifying the managers of the tlieatres that permits must bo obtained before the theatres wcrb let foi Sunday concerts "or meetings.
'The Collingwood County Council wrote, asking for the support of tho council in endeavouring.to get the Government to proceed with the developfiicnt of the l'liponga mine. It was resolved lo give tlio support asked for.
Tho Wellington Hospital Board forwarded a copy of estimates and levies for the year. Last year Petone's levy was JiluOO l!)s. Bd,, this year it will lie £1768 18s. -til., together with a contingent liability of <£401 ss. Id. It was decided to ask tho Wellington City Council to arrange for a conference of local bodies fill'ccted by the leyies for the purpose of discussing not only th.o levy for ordinary purposes, but. also the contingent liability.
The health inspector notified a case of diphtheria in tho borough. The Hon. T. M. ffilford advised that tho resolution regarding tho. shipping monopoly had been noted, and would bo recorded.
