EASTBOURNE MAYORALTY

NOMINATIONS FOE COUNCIL.

Yesterday nominations ■ closed for the Eastbourne Borough Mayoralty and council, elections. Three candidates have been nominated for the Mayoralty, their names being:— Phineas Levi (at present holding office), nominated by A. Walker, V. B. Willie, C. A. Marquis, and W. H. Nash. Francis Henry Mather, nominated by Thomas BalliDger, William Allen, H. W. Shortti and C. G. W. Richards; Charles Bussell, nominated by J. Fitzeimmons, E. Macpherson, C. M. , M'Grath, and J. Danks. . . Eleven nominations have been received for councillors,' and thore are eight vacancies. Five of tho sitting members are seeking re-election, and their names are given first in the following list of nominations:— ' Hary Gttstav Stayer, Caesar Augustus Marquis. Wallace Eutherford Gardew Macpherson, Adobh William John Cook, William Harry George Bennett, Hugh Black, Sam Freeborouah. Fisher, Henry Foley, Claude Lionel Green, Robert Edwin Manley, Thomas William Furlong Mareden.

ADDRESS BY ME. M'EWAN. Mr. J. W. M'Ewan, who is again contesting the Petone Mayoralty, addressed a fairly large meeting in St. Augustine s Hall, and met with a good reception., He dealt fully with the housing problem. and advocated a vigorous policy on the part'of the Government in the way of workers' dwellings on land already ftcauirecl by the Government. Hje defended the position of the town as regards rates, and pointed out- that Petone compared favourably with towns.of similar. size and importance. The upkeep of the Hutt Koad and Hospital and charitable aid levy was a heavy burden on the ratepayers. At the conclusion of the address Mr. M'Ewan was accorded a vote of thanks and confidence.
