MIRAMAK BOROUGH

MEETING AT SEATOUN. A meeting of ratepayers and residents was held at the Masonic Hall, Seatoun, last evening to, hear the views of Mr. Stanley M. Stone, a' candidate for the Mayoralty of Miramar. Mr. A. D. Crawford presided. Mr. Stone dealt with the question of amalgamation of the lorough, and said he desiTed to explain his position in re6pect to tho matter; If elected, he would

take the earliest opportunity of waiting on the City Council and finding out txnetly how far tho city v.as prepared to meet Alirawar, as it would be suicidal, ho thought, for the borough to hand over its valuable assets without conditions. When he had found out all that could be said for and against the proposal, lit: would call a public neeting of the residents, and ivouM give them the benoni of the information he had obtained. Ho had an open mind on the matter, and if amalgamation with the city were going to benefit the borough it Mould have In*, whole-hearted support, but if, on *he other hand, it. were proved to the satisfaction of the residents that it was not to the best interests of the borough, then ho would do his best to make the borough second to none in New Zealand. If amalgamation could not be carried through on reasonable conditions, he would immediately have estimates prepared for supplying the hills and portions of the flats that wore at'present without water and drainage, with those conveniences. He would also recommend that a eteam roller be procured for tho borough in order that the streets nud roads might be kept in good condition. He was a strong believer in the contract system, and wort's of any magnitude ho would let bv tender, preferring this lo the system oFday work or the percentage basis. He was in favour of tlip frontages of building sites beiug iwiintaiiied at not less than 40ft. He put' up a strong fight for|this somo time npp. Jtr. Rtone touched on a variety of minor subjects of iniportaned to the residents, and received an excellent -hearing. He'wns accorded a unanimous vote of confidence.
