FINANCIAL STATEMENT. The fortnightly meeting of ihe Petone Borough Council .was held last evening, rhere were present :-His Worship the \lavor (Mr .T. W. M'Ewan) and Councilors Cox, M'Kenzie. Kyle, Ncwland.-Jones, rovey. «n.d Broe-kelbank • Mr W Fleming, on behalf of Mr. Ji. r. Turnbull, wrote stating Hint he was mdeavouring to arrange a meeting of the i-nrious owners to arrive at some satisiac:ory settlement of the sand-drift m Jack ■on Street. , ,_ . The Under-Secretary, Department Inter, iml Affairs, forwarded a copy of gazette notice regarding the celebration of Anzac Day. It was resolved that the matter be'left in the hands'of the executive offi;ers to make arrangements for a suitable celebration, of the day. The Milton Borough Council asked for the support of tho council in its endeavour to get a State-owned mercantile service in order that the producers will not be dependant on the shipping monopolists and combine. It was resolved to give the support asked for. The balance-sheet for the year ended March 31, 1919, was presented to the council. The Mayor said he had not hnd time to go into in detail, but if the council wished he would call a special meeting to consider same. It was in* possible for anyone to say that the council's business had been conducted extravagantly when compared with Jjie prewar period. Before (lie war labourer* were paid 7s. per day, and now thej wero getting 12s. per day. Material had gone up nearly 11)0 per cent, on the average- The principal receipts for the year were:—General account, .£9771! water works maintenance account, i.'2395 motor service, .£3020; Hospital rate, ,£1539; library receipts, Ml 2s, 3d.; Hutl Road rates, .£1337; gas works, .£15,177. coal department, .£5018; gas-fitting, J!1023 gas maintenance account, ,£167; plumbing and advances account, .£4224; interest rates, .£6OOO. The total receipts were ■£50,160 145..1 d. The expenditure was:General account, ,£10,211; water works, JE2213; motor service, .£5090; Hospital, JJ1500; library, ,£243; Hutt Road, .£117(1: gas woi'ks, .£13,02!); coal department, .£4917; gas fittings, .£1144; givs maintenance, .£I4S lis. 9d.; plumbing and advances account, .£3IHG; interest and sinking fund payments, jCGS6S; making j total expenditure of .£49,720, thus'giving a small surplus of receipts over expenditure for the year. The overdraft at thi bank was .£5218 'plus an advance of .£207! on account of the new gas-holder. Out standing rates amounted to d£IGSS. Ol this latter amount i'92-t belonged to th< last financial year. In connection witl the gas woi'ks, the management cosl worked out at 31 per cent, of the expendi tnro. In 1907 the cost of managemoni was f>i per cent., so thnt in the perioi mentioned the management cost had beoi reduced by 2 i)i;r cent. It was finallj decided tliat iii lieu of having a 6pecia meeting to consider the balance-sheet eacl councillor should be supplied with a sum mary of the principal accounts.
