NEW LINERS ORDERED. Advices have been received that substantial orders for new vessels for-'all the large British lines have-been placed -with various British yards. The P. and 0. : Line lately completed arrangements with Harlond and Wolff, Belfast, for the construction of two 16,000 ton mail and passenger steamers for their Australian service, in addition to the Napunda,' a steamer of the same tonnage in course of completion at Queen's Island. Largo vessels ; aro also being considered or constructed for the l'acilic Steam Navigation Company, the White Star Line, Elder, Dempster, and Company, and Lamport and Holt, at Belfast; while the Clyde and Tyno yards are busy with the orderß for ships, mostly of largo tonnage. The P. and 0. branch liners are now-nearing completion at Caird's yardß in Greenock, and other vessels for the fleet havo been provisionally ordered elsewhere. Cunardors are on order in several yards, including Oammell Laird's at Dirlteuhead, and" Bar-row-on-Furness, whore another P. and O. steamer is nearing completion. The vesEel is staled to he specially built to meet the requirements of the Australian trade. The Orlont and other Australian trading linoa have large constructional programmes under way or under consideration. CRITICISM OP STANDARD SHIP.. A criticism of the Imperial Government's policy in building standardised ships was mado by Lord Inchcape in his presidential address at the annual meeting of the Peninsular and Oriental Stsam Navigation Company. Lord Inchcape stated:—"Had shipowners been allowed to build their own ships the British mercantile marino after the war would have bceu much ' better equipped for the general trade of the world than it is to-day, and so far as meeting the requirements of the war goes, there would, I believe, have beeu just as many ships afloal or nearly so as there aro now. I havo nothing to say against the so-called standard Bhips, they are excellent in their way, bub we all build, and have always built, standard ships, We settle the type of ship wo require, and we place an order not for one ship but for several, 1 and the builders proceed right away. Standardisation, liowover, has its limits. We decline to be fossilised, and the next batch which we build iß"an improvement on t.ho previous one. There is uo finality in ship design or construction. I venture to say it would have been infinitely better if owners had been left free to invest their depreciation, surplus earnings, and the amounts they have obtained for- the shipß that havo been sunk in replenishing their fleets," .
