NOTES FROM VARIOUS CENTRES MANAWATU At a meeting of the Palmerston North High School Hoard of Governors on Monday night, over which Mr. T. 1!. Hodder presided, in confirmation of his telegraphed advice the Director of Education wrote, advising that a grant .'.lot exceeding ilfl.flOflV had been approved towards the erection of the new school for girls, in accordance with the plan submitted by the board. The director pointed out that the board was asked at the same time to recognise that the sum named was to bo taken to represent the maximum amount that the Government could undertake to provide towards the cost of the new buildings, except as regards any claim by way of subsidy in the usual course. The sum named, it. was thought, should bo sufficient to cover a substantial proportion of the furnishings as well as tlie buildings, but any deficiency in this, respect the board would be expected to arrange for out of its own resources. The chairman reported that the specifications were all already prepared, and the matter of tho erection of the buildings would be pushed on with all expedition. The Timaru High Sc-hnol Board wrote with reference to a conference of representatives of boards throughout the Dominion, which it suggested might with advantage lie held to discuss matters of general interest in connection with secondary education, especially in regard to capitition payments and teachers' salaries. Tt was unanimously agreed to support the proposal to hold the conference, it being pointed out that there was room for vast improvement in the matter of salaries, tiie accounts at present paid being wholly incommensurate with the work of secondary teacn-

Last Sundav anniversary services were held in connection with the Apiti Methociist Sundav School in the morning, afternoon, and evening, and they passed off very successfully. . A feature of the services which were conducted by the Eev. J. Kichards. was the singing of the Sundav school children, accompanied by the church orchestra, under the direction of Mr. H. Palmer. It was decided to bring the matter up at the annual meeting of householders with a view to forwarding a strong protest to the Department. Mr. P. T. Kobinson considered that a public indignation meeting should be held if the work were not soon undertaken. The headmaster, ill. Rjdei, said that owing to its ago the school was in a dirty and unhygemc condition.
