PAYMENTS NEARLY A total of nearly ,£96,000,000 hiis been paid by the Imperial Supplies Department to the producers of New Zealand since the Department was established. Following are the total payments and those for last quarter under the various headings :— First quarter, Total to 1919. March 31. £ £ Frozen meat 2,055,51-1 32,869,318 Cheese. 2,724,254 12,738,052 Butter 1,991,716 5,651,619 Wool 10,100,518 -10,475,712 Sheepskins ■ 199,699 1,581,413 Sundries .... 324,710 2,593,486 Totals ... 17,399,711 95,909,600 The quantities of the produce shipped during the quarter are cs f0110w:—159,045 quarters of beef, 417,654 carcasses mutton, and 540,431 carcasses lamb; 383,354 crates of cheese and 528,706 boxes of butter; 252,598 bales of wool, although with respect to the wool the payments made during the quarter represent 384,532 bales. The grand total quantities of moat shipped since the requisition, March 81,' 1915, are 2,452,259 quarters of beef, 8,392,329 carcasses mutton, and 9,804,344 carcasses lamb; also, 1,677,028 crates cheese and boxes butler. With respect to. wool 1,531,473 bales of greasy and 225,129 bales freezing companies' slipe wool have been shipped. To scourers 233,451 bales of greasy wool liaje been delivered for treatment; 121,994 bales of scoured and fellmonsers' slipe wool have been shipped, nnd "9t,306 of such wools are now available for shipment. The quantities of. produce held in store awaiting shipment as. on March 31 include 5,749,878 carcasses of meat, eqmil to 601b. of meat per freight carcass; also 461,359 crates of cheese of which 392,255 I crates are held in the North lsliuul and 69,104 crates in the South Island; and 93,729 boxes of butter, cf which 77,234 are held in the North Island and 16,485 in the South Islnnd. The. round sum of ,£96,000,000 above referred to represents purchases of produce mads by the Imperial Government. In addition to these there .is to be taken into account in estimating the high productivity of the Dominion and the prices which its produce commands oversea, the hemp, tallow, kauri, gum, and other produce exported.
