PETONE MAYORALTY
MR. J. AV. M'EAVAN TO STAND AGAIN. A large and representative gathering of I'etone electors waited upon Mr. J. AV. M'Ewan last evening to ask him to again contest the Mayoral election, and also the Wellington Harbour Board and Hospital Board election. Mr. Ashman introduced the deputation and referred to the valuable work done for the borough-by Mr. M'Ewan during the troublous time of war, and the appreciation the electors had for the good work done by him for returned soldiers, and also the large amount' of sacrifice made by himself and Mrs. M'Ewan, particularly through the painful time of the epidemic.
Messrs.. 'M'Beaii, Carey, and Piper, on behalf of the citizens, expressed apprecination .of the valuable service rendered the borough by Mr. M'Ewan during the long period he had held the office of Mayor, and expressed the hope that ho would once again contest the election. Mr. M'Ewan, in reply, thanked the deputation for their remarks, and said that two years ago he had stated that in all probability it would be his last contest- for the position of Mayor because he felt that the end of the present term would represent twelve years of bis life, largely devoted to the public interest of this town, but recognising as he did that it was the duty of every wan in a town such as Petono to do what lie could to push along the .best; interest of that town, he had decided, if the people felt that another could and would fill Ihe breach to stand aside for that man, bnl: the right man was not in sight. He had been asked, by many people during the week, to once more contest the position of Mayor, and until meeting (ho deputation his mind was that of an individual almost persuaded. Now, however, after hearing the deputation and 6eeing the enthusiasm shown bv them, bo was fully persuaded. He again thanked the deputation for the confidence reposed in him, and reminded them That by giving him a good council they could considerably lighten liis labours.
