Trevor, Laws, Planning, and Wvlie (s.). won by 7 points, from. Stacey, Dixon, Tattersail, and J. Nash (s.), tho scores being 21-17. Three rinks from Palmerston North will shortly visit Wellington. A bowling match, for tho Dixon Cup was played at raimerston on, Saturday between a rink from Paliiatua and tho holders (Terrace End). The following were the players.— Paliiatua: M'Sherry, AVakemann, Walsh, Corrigan (s.); /I'erraco End: Wallace, Fletcher, Tapp, Knnkin (s.). Terrace End opened tho score with one to the first head, and at the tenth head tlia score was 12-3 in their favour. On the six following heads Paliiatua added _ 13 to tho score, the gamo then standing Paliiatua IG, Terraco End 12. Paliiatua only scored onco afterwards, and tho final score was 22-17 in favour of the holders. The next game for tho cup will bo against N. H. Nash's rink (Palmerton North Club) next Saturday. Tho Palmerston North cricket competition was continued on Saturday al'torliooil, when High School met Railway. High School batted first and mado 108 (Stockwell 55, K. Hodder 30, G. Monrad 27; Johnston 23, and Ci. 'I'ovey 21). Allinghani captnrcd six wickets for 24 runs. Proud threo for 21, and M'Vicar. ono for 20. Time did not permit Bailway to completo their innings, which, in accordance with a new regulation, will Jiavo to be finished next week. They lost four wickets for 58 runs, A. Millar Iteing caught by Dawber for IG, J. Ongley (11) and M'Vicar (12) both howled l>y M. Hodder, and J., Matthows disposed of by K. Hodder at a cost of S runs. J. Allingliam, who was not out, Lad ono run to his credit. Jf. Hodder took two wickets for 25 runs, and K. Hodder two for 23.
.Road work is progressing very favourably on the To l'apa Block (a few miles out from Danne'virke), which has been acquired for n returned soldiefs' settlement. Several miles of Toad formation have beoi carried out and a number of bridges erected. The forthcoming election for Mayor at Dannevirke will be the first contest of the kind for several yeajs.
At the last meeting of the Danncvirke Borough Council the Hastings Borough Council's resolution was dismissed recommending that Goneral Sir .Andrew Russell should be the ntxl Governor of New Zealand. Although desiring that every possible honour should be done General Russell, the council decided not to support the remit. It was resolved to send a letter of >-pprec.iation to Mr. G. Hnnter, M.P., for his services to tho borough, a& owing to tho new electoral boundaries Danuevirke town will no longer bo in the Waipawa electorate, represented by Mr. Hunter. The salary of tho town clerk, Mr, Meal's, was increased to jE'IOO a year, Mid a bonus of X 25 voted him for special work in revising (ho borough by-laws. Helative to peace celebrations it was decided to ask the headmasters of the local schools to attend a special meeting of tho- council, in order that arrangements could bo made for the school children to prepnre for the event. The "elcan-up week" which has been adopted in some towns in the Dominion was discussed, and, on tho suggestion of the Mayor, Mr. Bansom, it was decided to recommend the incoming council to adopt it.
Mr, K- Gillespie, 0110 of the soldiers' representatives on tho Dannovirke Repatriation Committee, has resigned owing to private business. Trooper F. C. Whibley, son of Mr. and Sirs. .T, P. During the hearing of a ease in tho Magistrate's Court at Paluierston yesterday a defendant stated that he had not sprayed his orchard becauso ho wis afraid that his children might ho poisoned by eating fruit contaminated by tho spraying fluids. At tho Magistrate's Court yesterday at Palmerston three boys were charged with t.lio theft at Shannon of various articles, of a total value of .£2 lis. (id., the property of Harold E. Hook. Evidenco ,was given that tho three lads escaped from Weraroa Training Farm on March 23, and somo time during tho night they arrived in Shannon. There they broko a window with a. hammer and stole ft number of articled, including three metal watches, a. razor, and an electric torch, besides entering several dwellings to obtain food. There were previous convictions against tho lads, one of them having been before the Court on tlireo other occasions. The Magistrate, Mr. 15.
