Mr, S. L. P. Free, S.M., sat as a Commission in Msstorton yesterday to take evidence in respect to. tho liability of local authorities for the construction of a bridge over the Taulierenikau Biver, near Featherston. Tho controlling authority in tho mattor is tho I'eatherston County Council. This council agreed to contribute two-thirds of the cost of the bridge, but mado a demand upon local bodies extending as far as Ekotaliuna for the balance. Tho wliolo of the local bodies, with tho excoption of Grey town and Featherston Boroughs, objected to {lie allocation. At tho sitting of the Commission evidence was called to show that a number of tho local bodies cited had practically no interest in tho bridge Mr. Free will mako his report ana recommendations to tho Governor-General in due course. A Yankee tournament, played on the Masterton Lawn Tenuis Club's courts on Saturday, was won by Mr. Marshall and Miss B. Holmwood. Tho Masterton Executive of tho Farmers' Union is urging upon tho Board of Agriculture tho neocssity' for investigating tho introduction of the cattle-tick into Now Zealand, and to lake the necessary steps to have the infected districts isolated. At a meeting of tho Teachers' Institute, held in Masterton on Saturday, a programmo of lectures for tho coming year was drawn up. It was decided to endeavour to obtain railway concession tickets for tcxichors coming to Masterton to attend these lectures. Sixteen members of the Masterton Golf Club aro still on activo scrvico. Tho members of tho Masterton Bowling Club on Saturday last contributed .£79 towards the cost of extending tho pavilion, A sum of ;053 Ms. 3d. was taken at tho sole of work held in Masterton on Saturday on bohalf of tho funds of tho Y.M.C.A. At a ineoling of the Teachers' Institute in Masterton on .Saturday, the following resolution was carried:—'"That this committee urges tho executive of the N.ZJ3.I. to impress on tho Education Department tho necessity of formulating an adequate Dominion scalo of salaries for woodwork and domestic science instructors engaged in primary school teaching, and of scouring for married instructors house allowances similar to those given to married assistants."
