PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL

The fortnightly meeting of tho Pcbono Borough Council was held last evening. Tliero were present: Ilis Worship the Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan), and Councillors Cox. Brockelbank, Churchous®, Ivyle, M'Kenzie, Jones, Tovey, and M'Dougall. Tho Hon. T. M. Wilford, M.P., wrote stating that he would bring tho* council's letter re. repatriation of alien prisoners of war before Cabinet. Tho Acting-Prime Minister forwarded a copy of his reply to the Devonport Borough Council ro the repatriation of alien prisoners of war to the effect that tho question was one which could not be decided in New Zealand, it being an international one. Tho Hastings Borough Council forwarded a copy of their resolution re the Governorship of the Dominion. Tho resolution was received. v Tho Minister of Public .Health wrote expressing the thanks of the Government for assistance rendered by governing bodies and tlio people in the recent inlUienzn epidemic. The Minister of Railways (tho Hon. W. 11. Herrips) advised that the. council's suggestion ro automatic gate 9 for trains would be considered. The Deputy-Public Trustee wrote advising that contracts had been arranged for tho repairs to cottages in Te Puiu and Armidalo Streets. A further letter dealing with the same _ matter was received from tho Minister in charge of the Public Trust Office, stating that tho delay in carrying out tho repairs was due to c-auses outside (ho control of the Public Trustee, but tenders in excess of JHOOO had now been accepted for tho renovation of tho cottages. Tho chairman of the Pelone Memorial Committee wrote, asking Iho council to set aside two oeres on the Recreation Ground as a site for tho erection of a memorial monument.—On tho motion of Councillor Brockelbank it was decided to iiaile the Memorial Committee to vueot in conjunction with the council, lo select a site for the memorial either in liuick Street or on the lioerealion Ground. If Ihe Recreation Ground silo is chosen, to select a site that will not restrict Ihe area of the playing grounds. 'Ac Board of Managers for St. David's Church drew attention to tho unsatisfactory .water pressure on Sunday morning, and pointed ont that at limes it was impossible to use Ihe big organ. David's Club lie granted the use of one ground. On (lie motion of Councillor Jones it was decided to ask the ltugby Union tn IV,cot tho council to discuss conditions and draw up programmes for the season. The Mayor., on behalf- of the fence Celebration Committee, suggested that Ihe council should provide the structure for the arch to be erected opposite! the Council Chambers. The shopkeepers in the vicinity would decorate it, and Itaywards, Ltd., would light it.—lt was decided that the council erect tho structure, and that the engineer reportas to costs.
