VICTORIA COLLEGE COUNCIL
A meeting ,of the Victoria College Council was -held last night. There were present: Messrs. Clement Wa.tson (chairW. 11. Morton.- It. M'Callum, M.P., R. A. Wright, M.P„ P. Levi, F. H. Bakewell, Oscar Smith, the Rev. W. A. Evans, and Professor T. A. Hunter. The council decided to .nppoint Miss E. R. Davies, 8.A., as assistant to .Professor Mackenzio for one year at a salary of .-£135.
Accounts amounting to .£1209 were passed for payment. The treasurer anil Ilia registrar were •directed.to withdraw from the Savings Bank tlio mim of .61000, nnd place the woneys and tho account of tho college in the-Bank of New Zealand. A letter was received from the Universitjj of Now Zealand regarding the payment of examination fees to professors examining their own students. Jt is the custom now for crtain professors, chiefly in professional courses such as medicine and branches of engineering to examine their own siudonts, and the University; pays for this service. Hie question raised' was as to whether professors should he required to undertake these examinations as part of tli"ir regular duties for the ct-llege. the professors -Ijeing 'employed hy the. colleges and not by. the University. The. letter was referred to tho. Professorial Board lor a .report. . A.letter -.>-n=! received from Professor •Stoughton Hojburn. an Oxford Univer-. sit'y lecturer in art subjects, lately engaged in'university ler hiring in Califorma. asking for encasements for lectures under Victoria Collenre. Tho council, no funds available, resolved to reply that it could'offer no engagements to tho professor. . '
