NEWCASTLE COAL

INCREASE'IN FREIGHTS. Merchants have announced that, the wholesale price of Newcastle coal h to be increased by 3s. 6d. per ton in consequence of the rise in freights between Australia and Now Zealand. The freight charge from Newcastle to Wellington has been increased froin 16s. 6d. per ton to 20s. per ton, as a result of the extra expense imposed upon the shipping companies by the quarantine regulations of the Commonwealth Government. The risj in freights, dates from March 1. No information is available in Now Zealand as to the probable duration of the present Australian quarantine regulations. The Federal and State authorities are all apparently determined to secure the maximum amount of protection from infection. Merchants assume that the addition made to the freights will _be removed when the quarantine barrier is raised.
