HOUSEHOLD STATISTICS
AN INTERESTING EXPERIMENT.
An interesting experiment in the collection of household statistics is to be made bv the Census and Statistics. Twenty thousand books of suitable form are to be distributed to people who will attempt to keep accounts of. their expenditure over a period of six montns. The Labour Department some years ago issued a number of housekeeping books to members of unions and other people, but the information obtained was not sufficiently complete to be of much value. The Census Department, which has had the assistance of a private firm in the printing of the books, hopes to arouse public interest by means of a competition, with prizes for the best kept books. ■ The books provide for daily entries of household expenditure on the following lines :-Bread, flour, meat, bacon, and ham, milk, 'butter, sugar tea, coffee and cocoa, vegetables, and fru.it other foods, house rent, clothing and drapery, boots and shoes, fuel and light, tobacco, etc., train and rail fares, sports and recreation. Information is also sought as to the number of persons in the household, and their earnings ami conterbur tions; tho size of the dwelling, and (if not rented) the Tecunring payments; insurance provident and trade union contributions. These daily payments are to be summarised at the end of each month, and again at the end of six months. The keeping of such a return shou.d be interesting to the average householder, and the information obtained from several thousand of these books ; will enable the Government Statistician. to produce some authoritative statistics bearing on the question of wages and the cost of living. •
