NOTES AND COMMENTS

[By Glencoe.] ' Two horses that won at Eiccarton on Saturday, in Adjutant and Gamecock, and Hetaua, who finished third in the Two-year-old Handicap at Takapuna, were not among the list of acceptors telegraphed by. the Press Association. The long spell he has had and the gelding operation 6eem to have worked a big improvement in Gamecock, and the Chokebore cast-off won at his first start for .his new owner. This was in the Post Handicap, one mile, at the C.J.C. meeting on Saturday, but the class hemet was not as good as he was capable of defeating as a two-year-old. C. Emerson, H. Young, and G. Young each rode two winners at the C.J.C. meeting on Saturday. Emerson and Groy are now at the head of the winning list with twenty-sij- wins each. Acquittal, who won the Lyttelton Plate ,at the C.J.C. meeting.-is owned by Sir Georgo Clifford, and was making his first appearance with the colours up. Ho is by Treadmill from Fairhaveu. Steepholm, runner-up to Acquittal, is also owned by Sir George Clifford, and is by Treadmill from Bonnie Brae. At the Takapuna meeting on Saturday King Lupin was expected to distinguish himself in the Suburban Handicap, five furlongs, but he was unlucky at the barrier, and this spoilt any chance he had. At the Rosehill meeting on January 18 Bimoter won the Flying Handicap from end to end. The Malster horse has been a most inconsistent performer since R. J. Mason sold him, and only a week before he won at Eosehill he performed very indifferently at Warwick Farm. British Arch, who has won several hurdle races 6ince being shipped to Sydney, very nearly brought off a surprise in the Carliugford Mile at the Eosehill meeting last month. The Marble Arch gelding took charge after going a furlong, and it was only in the last stride that-Yarico got up and beat him. A large number of local sportsmen intend being present at New Plymouth this week to see the race for' the Taranaki Stakes. Although there is a good field left in the raoe, it is not anticipated that any horse except Silver Link will oppose Gloaming and Desert Gold. Fractions from the totalisator are a big item for any racing club that has a large turnover. The Wellington Rucing Club received .£4OO froni this source during the Cup meeting. Mr. P. J. Kelleher,. the Government totalisator inspector, has been having a busy time lately. He officiated at Palliatua on Thursday, at Ricarton on Satur. day, 1 while on Wednesday and Thursday next he will bo at New Plymouth, Two prominent defections from the Giabor'ne Cup to be run on Thursday next are Vagabond and Athens 11. The former has gone lame, while Athens II raced on three days at the Takapuna meeting, and, being only a three-year-old, his owner doubtless considers this enough for him. . Nominations for all events at the Dannevirko meeting close on Wednesday, February 12, at 8 p.m. The meeting is a two days one, and will be held on February 2G mid.27.. There is a possibility that the Dunedin winter meeting will be a three days cross-country affair. The Shannon, grand-dam of EewiPoto, is a sister to Brooklet, the winner of the Wellington Cup of 1896, and Red Ribbon is a daughter of Blue Ribbon, the winner of the Wellington Cup of 1009. Windorah, who won the TakUpuna Cup, is a three-year-old son of King Kufus and Condainine. This marked bis first success of any importance, but ho won doubles at each ■of two small meetings recently. The .following corrections in the telegraphed- weights for the 'Dunedin meeting are announced: Hurdles:—Silver shield and Calma, 9st. 71b. each (not list.) Cup: Glendower,'Bst. lib. (not Bst. Jib.); Linden, 7st. lllb. (not 7st. 101b.); Winter Cherry, 7st. lllb. (not 7st. 101b.; lhaddeus, 7st. lib. (not 7st. 21b.); Publicans Handicap: Linden, Bst. 6lb. (not Bst. ill).). A permit has been granted to the Tuapeka County Jockey Club to hold a race meeting on Easter Saturday. The club intends to celebrate its jubilee on that date, and to call the principal event the ruapeka Jockey Club Jubileo Cup. It is reported that J. Campbell will not go across to Australia to ride Mr. Kemball's horses. He is going into hospital to undergo an operation for appendicitis. -. Fiery Cross has been showing figns of lameness on the tracks at Eiccarton, and H inter Cherry also is reported to be somewhat lame. REHANDICAPS FOR DUNEDIN. Mr. ,T. Henrys has declared the following rohandicaps for the Dunedin Cup mealing: Adjutant, Sst.illb., five pounds extra in the Cup; Daytime, Bst, lib., nine pounds in the Publican's Handicap; Adjutant, lOst. 131b., four pounds in the Stewards' Woltor Handicap.
