JEWELLERS' DISPUTE
Tho Conciliation Council was enpaged yesterday in considering the jewellers' dispute. The Conciliation Commissioner (Mr. W. Newton) prosided. The employers were represented by Messrs. L. R. Partridge. R. N. Denton, and W. A. W. Grenfell. Tho assessors for the union were Messrs. A. L. Monteath and D. G. Kean. Mr. J. Moar, the third assessor was unablo to be ' present owing to illness. To the demands of the union (which have already been published) the employers submitted counter proposals, the chief of which were that tho existing award should he renewed for three years, without any alteration in tho hours. The union desires a reduction- in tho hours from 48 to 44. The existing weekly wage is £3 45., while the union asks for £4. Increases in wages for apprentices and female workers are also demanded. Tlio matters in dispute were debated for a considerable time and no agreement was reached. Finally it was decided to adjourn for a week, when the council will further deliberate on tho matter and endeavour, to come to an agreement.
