A CHARGE OF THEFT.

A waterside worker, William Raven Heenan, was charged before Mr. F. \ • Frassev, S.M., at tho Magistrate s Court yesterday with having stolen a typewriter, valued at £7, the property of Percy Rogers. Accused was remanded for a week. George Thomas was charged with having driven a motor-oar past a stationary trnmcar in Kent Terrace on December 15 at a speed of more than four miles an hour. Dofendant entered a plea of not guilty, saying that the tramear had not stopped when he went past. Evidence was given by the motorman of the tramear that the car had stopped. Defendant said he cleared the tramcar before it had stopped. A fine of £1, with costs £1 Is., was imposed. CIVIL ACTIONS. OLAIM -FOR RENT AND POSSESSION. Before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., John James Boyd, iun., proceeded against J. Evan's to obtain possession of a tenement, together with £16 rent. It appeared that defendant had been given notice to quit on October 14 last, but had failed to leave on account of having been laid up as the result of an accident. He said he had tried to find another house, but had been unsuccessful. Judgment was entered for tho amount of rent claimed, and defendant was ordered to give up possession by February 4. Mr. G.. Watson appeared' for plaintiff. UNDEFENDED CASES. Judgment for plaintiffs by default was given by Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., iu the following undefended cases:—A. Mason v. Henry £4 13s. 6d. by January 28, in default four days' imprisonment; and T. .Callinpham was ordered to pay Ella Lamb £6 Bs. by January 28, in default to be detained in gaol for six days.
