THE CAWTHRON INSTITUTE
A SUBSIDY SUGGESTED. The Cawthron estate, which was left as n bequest for the encouragement of scientific research, was mentioned in the House of Representatives yesterday. The Hon. T. 11. Wilford, -Minister of Stamp Duties, said that his Department had collected death duty to the amount of .£40,000 on this estate, which amounted to .£210,000. He had not been able lo reliimiish this duty, since at the time the Government hnil needed all available revenue for war purposes But he would suggest that the. member for Nelson, who was interested in' this matter, might approach the Government on the subject. Mr. T. A. H. Field (Nelson) said the trustees of the Cawthron ■ Institute would like the Government to pay a subsidy of i2OOO a. year in consideration of the sum paid in estate duty. The income of the institute would thus be extended to i£12,000 a year, and the study of New Zealand products could be extended accordingly, '
