FREE PLACES
.ROOM FOR ALL PROFICIENCY CERTIFICATE HOLDERS. The College Governors have already made provision in the case of the Girls' College and the Wellington Boys' College for all Stato school children who will be entitled to free places in those institutions next year. For the past few years there has beon moro or less of a scramble for those places on account of lack of'accommodation, and a great ileal of heart-burning has ensued among those who, though entitled to consideration, have not been successful in gaining places. Thanks to new blood on .the Board of College Governors the mntter of providing accommodation has been taken in time this year, and no trouble is anticipated when the colleges r£nssenibln for work on February 4 next. The increased accommodation at the Girls' College lias been made under an iimiablo arrangement with the Wellington Education Hoard, which will hand over to the Governors the control of that building attached to the Normal School (at Thorndon), which was formerly used as the manual and technical department of the old Teachers' Training College, and which adjoins the Girls College grounds in Brook Street. This building (now being used for the purposes of a hospital) will bo- thoroughly fumigated, cleansed, repainted, furnished anew, and the four large classrooms it contains will amply accommodate the new year s rush of proficiency certificate holders. Owing to the epidemic it has not been possible lo hold an examination this year-end, and the certificates for general proficiency are to ba allotted by the 4?admaslers of the schools in conference with the inspectors.
