SAMOAN GARRISON
—. —9AN OUTBREAK OF. INFLUENZA. The Minister of Defence (Sir James Alien) stated yesterday that he had given instructions thai the men of the Samoan garrison should he demobilised as soon- as possible. Bnfc no definite dote could be fixed. A. sufficient, garrison would require to be maintained at Samoa for some time to come, probably until the fate of the island had neen determined at the Peace Conference An immediate difficulty, added the Minister, was that influenza had broken out in Samoa, and was spreading to a'serious extent. The Samoan Administration had cabled asking for medical assistance, .and he was trying to arrange for aid to be seni f ronr Sydney. New Zealand was not in V position to spare medical men at the present time.
