ABOMINABLE CONGESTION
-C ; WELLINGTON'S HOUSING PROBLEM. Councillor J. 0. Shorland asked the Mayor the following question at the City Council last evening:—"Will you §o into the question of the want of homes in this city?" "The position in Wellington today is unbearable," he added, "and if the Government will not face it,' the council snould."
Tho Mayor replied that some lime ago the council tried to get authority to build workmen's cottages, but tho laud they had in view was so dedicated that it could not bo used for the purpose. Hi? was sure that the council would ask Parliament to give tho necessary power. As to tho larger question of relieving the congestion, anything he could do towards getting more homes built here would bo done. He would not hesitate to vote for the raising of money (if it could be got at a reasonable rate) to build homos to relieve the present abominable position. Councillor L. M'Kenzio asked i£ tho Mayor would get the council to abolish the by-law which prohibited people from living over shops. That would relievo congestion to some extent.
