PUBLIC MISSIONARY MEETING

There was a large attendance at the annual missionary demonstration of tho Baptist Missionary Society held -last evening. The chair was taken by the Iter. W. H. Kinton, of Auckland. The chairman spoke briefly or the great changes which wero sweeping over India. Reference was made to the new national conscience which had _ been awakened, the new attitude of friendly tolerance towards Indian Christians, and of the great mass movement which is playing such an important part in welding the peoples of India .into olio whole. ~ i j The Rev. R. Bailey, of Auckland, addressed the meeting on mission work in China. The speaker, who had spent several months travelling all, over China in the interests of the China Inland Mission, spoke of the evil practices of demonism and the hold that ancestor worship still has on : the inhabitants of the Celestial Empire. Pastor M. P. W. Lascelles, of Timaru, spoke of his recent experiences in India. Special reference was made to the splendid work being done in East Bengal by the missionaries of the N.Z.B.M.S. A public meeting will be held this evoning at 7.30 o'clock. The subject is "Prohibition and Christian Patriotism."
