BANNED LITERATURE

' Sir,—May I have a little of.your, space to say a fow words in reply to the letter of Mr. Herbert Grinstead, published this morning. He concludes with tho remark that jtho Catholic section of the community would destroy the Government "as soon as look at it if it had its -way:" By "destroy" does Mr. Grinstead mean annihilate'or merely put out of power? Many people of all shades of belief are of opinion that a change would be beneficial. I think-Mr. Grinstead means to infer that Catholics as a body are disloyal. As he remarks, they are only oneseventh of the population, but they sent fourteen thousand men to the front before- conscription was enforced, which is a record the Catholics of New Zealand havo no cause to be ashamed of. For every mile of _battlefront held by Protestants, four niiles are held by Catholics. Is it the knowledge that so many Catholics are laying down their lives for them that raises the devil of sectarianism amongst our Baptist neighbours ? Personally, I think it a pity their literature ('') was barred. It would not have been in any great demnnd. Books of the ."Maria Monk" type would appeal only to people of a very low order of intelligence^—and it's really a shame to deny such any pleasure in life.—l am, etc., S. BOWEN. October 4.
