RITUALISTIC CHARGES
BISHOP JULIUS'S JUDGMENT,
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Ctifistchurch; Octooer 3. _ Bishop Julius to-day delivered _ his judgment hi the case in which ritualistic charges were made by Archdeacon Gossct against the llev. C. Perry, of St. Michael's Church.
As a. preliminary the Bishop expressed the conviction that tho proceedings were wholly without excuse, as it was well known to'tho archdeacon before they were instituted that Sir.'Perry had been admonished in respect to three charges, and readily agreed to the Bishop's rulings. These were the use of a, special epistle and Gospel without authority, tho alteration of the canon by the addition of a prayer of oblation and that of consecration, and a breach of tho third Rubric by celebration without communicants. In regard to tho charges of. the reservaton of tho Mr; Perry . only maintained conditions as he found them, the Bishop allowed reservation, with certain conditions. A charge that.lie instructed the people to say the "Hail Mary" was dismissed, also a charge that he prescribed vain repetitions. 111 regard to the charge that lie held towards the.peoplo consecrated bread, with tho words. Behold the Lamb of God," the Bishop said he found no warrant for the addition, which must be discontinued. Ringing tho church bell before and after consecration was an ancient practice of tho Church, and the Bishop was not prepared to forbid it; but the use of a sacring bell in the sanctuary was introduced without authority, and hewould 1 not sanction its retention. In regard to encouraging people to kneel at tho Inearnatus, lie was not prepared to demand rigid uniformty of tho attitude of worshippers. Placing tho crucifix on the wall above tile pulpit was allowed in England, and ho would permit it to remain. In regard to a cortain doctrine on the subject of ias£ inc and communion, Ih> that nothing contrary to doctrine was proved. ' ■■.
