THE DRIFT NORTHWARDS. Two feature I about the applications being made to .is Department for land by returned jldiers were remarked upon yesterfjv by. the Minister in charge (the lon. D. H. Guthrie). The Minister said that it had been observed that a greater number of men wore now applying for admission U> Government experimental farms for training, preparatory to going on their own areas. Previously the men had been unwilling to go through a training course. Tho Government was at present considering the question of whether it would bo necessary to haveincreased accommodation of a temporary character provided at Ruakura. Farm'. Inquiries were now being made as to the extent of the accommodation at present oxisting there, and as to tho genuineness of the applications now being received for admission. Mr Guthrie said also that it was re markable that the greater number of applications for land were for land m thiv North Inland. He had at present .coiisidorablo areas of land in the Po- tli I sin n<l available for settlement, but the demand was not equal to the supply. Even South Island men wero askiivj tor land in the north.
