THE TRAMWAY TROUBLE

SPECIAL "MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL. A special meeting of the City Council was held yesterday afternoon to consider the position. created by the refusal of the tramway men to work overtime. Tho tramways manager (Mr. N. a. Morton) reported to the council that he had conferred with the executive, of the Tramways Union, and stated that if the men returned to their work as usual, he would be prepared to recommend the council to grant a bonus of 10 per cMit. upon the ordinary time wages. The union had since declined his offer. No action was therefore taken by tl" , council in reeard to offer. The council was also advised that tlv notion of the men in refusing to work overtime was a breach of the tramwavs agreement, and it was decided that the men be called upon to carry out their duties m terms of the existing agreement. Owinc to tho men declining to fill m tho meal hour relief hours, a curtailed service lias had to be arranged. An advertisement states that the published suburban time-table has been cancelled as between , the hours c; 6.30 p.m. and 11 p.m. During that period the management will do their best to maintain a 10-minutes , ' seryice on all lines where formerly a !O-niinutcs ! service ha"s been maintained. They were able to do this last evening. Aβ endeavour is being made to maintain services as. far as Seatoun, Karori, and Wadestown are concerned, though no guarantee can be given that such will be the case. The nature of this notice by the tramway management should prepare the public for eventualities. The council consider that in tho interests of the public, who are immediately concerned, they have gone far enough to concilidte' the men by tho offer of a 10 i;er cent, inoreaso on all payments for ordinary time, and their determination to peo tho matter through is expressed in tho resolution calling upon the men to continue working in accordance witli the provisions o*f the existing agreement.
