SEAMEN'S WAGES
UNION DESIWES CONFERENCE WITH COMPANIES. By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, September 18. All the shipping companies have now received a communication from tho Federated Soamen's Union asking for a conference as early as possible to discuss the advisability of increasing by 50 per cent, tho wages of crews on oversea vessels, exclusive of Australian ports, and 25 per cent, on all other ships/ Tho reason for the demand is that thero has been a material differonco in the- , circumstances since the current'agreement was made in March of last year. Tho union suggests that subsidiary agreements should bo inano. It is interesting to note that the wages have been increased since December, 1915, by £3 per month, in addition to which overtime rates of Is. 3d. and Is. 6d. per hour respectively for ship and cargo work have been increased to a flat rato of 2s. per hour for all work. The wages for sailors and trimmers is now £11 u month and £13 for greasers and firemen.
