GENERAL PAU TO VISIT AUCKLAND
Auckland is shortly to be visited by Genernl l'au, liead of the French Mission to Australia, advico to that effect having been received by M. Leon Hippeau, Consul for 'France, states the "Star." Tho Mission, it will be remembered, ivas' headed by 31. Metin, formerly Minister of Labour in France, who was well known in Australia. The latter, however, died at. When Bourbaki's army was forced into Switzerland Pau refused to cross the border, and with a party of his men made his way by night through the_ German. lines back to France. . His service during the next forty years was principally with the French colonies, aud finapy lie-was appointed to a position on the Superior War Council of France. It was General Pan who realised tlie danger and menace of the steadily increasing German armies, and insisted on tho law of three years' service iii tho French Army. - In spite of tlm unpopularity of the measure, ho insisted that it was r-ecessary, and the law was passed. The result was the saving of France. , Tho general liad retired at the outbreak of war, but was .instrumental in driving back tlio Germans in Alsace. ■ Subsequently ho brought tho Belgian Army down from Antwerp to the French border.
