HEROES OF THE MERCHANT SERVICE
AN APPEAL IN A WORTHY CAUSE. (To tho Editor.) Sir,—You doubtlesß have noticed that tho British and Foreign Sailors' Society has inaugurated a very successful effort on behalf of the men of our mercantile marine, torpedoed crows, initemed seamen*, and similar sufferers through German frightfulness. Christchuroh and Dunedin between_ them have raised £40,000. Our object in writing is to ask the people of your province to do their share—and we feel sure they will. Surely, Sir, an island country like this cannot do too much for the brave men of the mercantile marine and their dependants. For all must recognise that our prosperity depends to'a very large extent on their loyal services to the Empire. A meeting is to be hold on Tuesday morning in the Town Hall at 10.80, when details will be gone into.—l Sta, etc., yours for the sailor, S. BOOTH, Hon. Organiser.
