WAR RELIEF

MONTHLY MEETING. Messrs. L. 0. H. Tripp, A. Macintosh, G. Shirtcliffo, J. Lewis, and' J. Hutcheson were present at a- meeting of the Executive Committee of the war Relief Association held yesterday afternoon. The statement of finances showed war funds at the hank £378 15s~ and imprest account £3 14s.' to. The investments total £73,015 16s. lOd. The total funds amount to £73,418 6s. 2d. The expenditure for the month of July amounted to £1015 I2s. lid., and the income to £370 los. 2d.; excess of expenditure over income (paid out of capital), £644 17s. 9d. The report was adopted. The Applications Committee reported as follows"The committee met on ten occasions since last meeting of the executive, and dealt with 271 applications; As the result principally of the decision of the committee to discontinue the practice of advancing against pay, as from the date amended allowances became payable (January 1, 1918), thsre has been a reduction of 10 per cent, in the number of claims dealt with during the first Bis months of' this year as compared with the same period in 1917. This has, effected a very slight reduction in the activities of th» committee that is more than compensated for by the extra -work involved iii dealing with the increasing number of claims from returned soldiers desirous of re-establishing themselves in civil occupations. During the past month we have started one man in a carrying business, have assisted two soldier settlers, have enabled three applicants to re-ostahlish their domestio positions, have sent several to employment, and assisted two to take up courses of vocational training, whilst several other claims of a similar nature are still under action. Direct financial assistance is, of course, being still rendered to the dependants of soldiers 'serving overseas, as well as to returned men and their relations—several of tho latter, acting uoon our advice, liave proved successful in obtaining a reconsideration of their case by the Pensions Board—and the number' of claims we receive in which another society is responsible, being steadily on the increase, it will be understood the work of the Applications Committee, whilst being practically without limit of variety, js fully as arduous as ever it as been."
