The oats market has iirmed, although tjiore is little • grqin Available with which to do business, Stocks in store are very small, as merchants have sold most of their holdings. Seed Gartons, Algerians, and Duns are ■worth up to ss. per bushel at country stations, and tho same price has been paid for a line of milling Gartons and Algerians. Owing to the scarcity of shipping a considerable quantity of oatnheaf chalf, sold to go north, has been resold. At the samo timo there is still good inquiry for prime bright chaff, and prices are firm, up to £7 per ton having been offored. It is reported that supplies of Marlborough chalf aro now exhausted.
' There is a good demand for seeds, and it.would appear ns if thcro will bo a fairly liirge sowing mado this season. Clover seeds are not very plentiful. There is inquiry from tho North Island for cocksfoot, but stocks held aro very light, as.merchants' supplies were heavily drawn upon to fill the demand caused by the North Island bush fires carlior in the year.
.Tho potato market advanced during the week, and it is reported that sales wore made at ,C 8 10s. to >69 per ton id; counini stations, but it i:; now weaker, and -£S fo ,BS ss. only is offered. The rise was apparently duo to the anxiety of merchants to get supplies shipped before large arrivals expected from Australia were due'. The high prices inle.'y ruling have not rosulled in many ' moro offering, for as is usually the cose when there is a sharp rise in any linn of produce, growers are inclined to htitd, and it is reported that even .ED per lon at country stations was refused a dsy or two ago. Tho arrival of about 100 sacks of onions at Auckland and 050 sacks at. Wellington from Melbourne has eased the lecnl mnrl.-ot.
