NOT ENOUGH MONEY
GRANTED FOR EDUCATION. An tag to a balance-sheet provoked a discussion yesterday at the Wellington Education Hoard on 6malluess of the Government grant for education. The chairman (Mr. T. Forsyth) 6aid that the trouble, was that Government was not supplying the money needed for education. It' it was necessary to buy a, pieco of land for school purposes and the price was ,£IOOO. tho Government gave .£SOO, leaving tho board to find tho balance. iTho board could only do as it had already dono, and that was take the money out of its rebuilding' fund. So tho auditor's tog was really pointing out tho weakness of the Government's position. Mr. R. A. Wright: How many thousands have wo token out of the rebuilding fiind to make up deficiencies? The secretary. .£15,000. Members said tho Government ought to be asked for the money. Reform in the way of better grants was urgently needed.
Mr. R. A. Wright said it was a scandalous position. The grant for education was not sufficient. Tho chairman stated that tho rebuilding fund had been eaten into and money was not on hand now for work that would soon be necessary.'
Mr. Wright: And the board is in a good position compared with some others, so what must the position bo in those places! He moved that the board should wait on the Minister respecting tho tag to the balance-sheet and ask him tho meaning of it, and also ask if he could see his way to grant tho board the money needed, which was really owing to the board. i The motion was carried.
