NEW ZEALANDERS ON ACTIVE SERVICE

PARTICULARS OF THE RETURNED MEN. The latest figures show that 90,000 men havo left New Zealand on active service, and that of this number 22,777-havo returned sick or wounded or on duty. Details supplied by the Hon. W. D. S. MacDonald are as follows:— Men embarked 96,000 In camp 8,400 On home Borneo 2,500 Nurses 4SO Total 107.380 Regarding the men who have returned to New Zealand the Minister gave tho following details:— Discharged or awaiting dischargo 18,011 Returned "to duty 1,805 Under treatment or on sick leavo 2.SGS

Total returned 22,777 Tho Minister also referred to the ad; ministration of the Discharged Soldiers' Information Department. Ho said that of the men discharged-29GS had been found employment. The cases of 3102 were under consideration and 3103 wcro not ready to be dealt with. Notifications had been received from 11.490 men to tho effect that they did not Tequiro_ assistance in re-establishing themselves in civil life In addition, the Government was uesua-ing that men temporarily incapacitated were receiving a living wage. Hhis was being done by subsidising their wages and % (living financial assistance to those who were learning new trades at technical schools and other institutions. At present G6 men who were attending classes were receiving a weekly nllowaiico of J2l. Soventv-one who had concluded their training had been found employment. Free training on the State farms had been given bo 14 men, of wliom six had completed the course and had left the farm. The Department had approved of Si men receiving an allowance to subsidise the wages they were receiving, and 5G similar applications wore under consideration. Financial assistance had been given to two men who were--com-plcting their apprenticeship, and four applications were receiving attention.
