WORK FOR RETURNED SOLDIERS
THE PUBLIC SERVICE. With reference to the criticisms that have been made on tho Government and its relations with returned soldiers, the Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. G. W. Russell) yesterday made a few iremarks in justification of the actions of the Government in the employment of returned soldiers in the Public Service.
"All Departments," ho said, "have been specially notified that preference in all cases is to be given to returned soldiers ' for casual work, and in tho case of work likely to last for some time the Public Service Commissioner invariably considers first the claims of returned soldiers '
for any position for which they are suitable in preference to other applicants. No less than 993 returned soldiers havo already been found employment in tho Public Service, 'but I regret'to say that only 590 of the men havo remained in the Service."
