YOUNG MAN'S LAPSE
SPENDING .BEYOND niS MEANS. A charge of having obtained the 6um of Xl 5 from Alfred John Carlton, secretary of the Commercial Travellers' Association, by means of a valueless cheque, was admitted by a ( young man named Milton Oman at tho Magistrate's Court yesterday afternoon. Tho offence was alleged to hive taken place on or about July 12 last. Evidenco was given by Detective James Torrance, who arrested accused, that tho latter made a statement to the effect that ho was a. returned soldier, and had filled in a blank cheque for the sum of ,£ls, which lie obtained from a friend at tho Commercial Travellers' Club. The cheque was cashed by the chief steward of the club. Chief-Detective Boddanr said the J>Ah had been repaid. Accused had really got himself into trouble through keeping company of an unduly attractive character.
Mr. T. Neave, who appeared for accused, stated that tho man's misfortune had been that he had kept, company which induced him to spend more money than his means entitled him to do. The money had been made good, and tho accused's parents, who worn very respectable, had taken steps to keep him away from evil influerees. " Mr. Ncave aeked that the accused be dealt with leniently, as he was a first offender, and would try to keep to the straight path in future. • Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., said accused would receive leniency, as he could/not he regarded as 'a criminal. ■ It was to be hoped that this appearance before the Court would serve as a warning to the accused, who would be convicted and ordered to como up for sentence when called upon
