The agents of the Taupiri Coal Company take exception to a statement of tho Mayor to tho effect that slack waß being sold in Wellington which was a wasta product, and adds that all s'ack from tho Taupiri mines waa direct from the workings. The Mayor did say that slack wa» being sold that was praotically a waste product, and he adheres to that statement, but did not specify that this was Taupiri alack. As a matter of fact Mr. R. Somplo said that tho slack being vended in Wellington was from dumps of unsaleable slack which had been piled up for years on tho Coast mines. Customs duties collected at the port of Wellington on Saturday amounted to £1120 10s. 6d.
